MAM12 - Scientific Research Project
Course description
Course ContentsThe research question should be about:
The processing of information needed for recording of data and decision making pertaining to the planning, organisation, evaluation and provision of healthcare
The development of systems for the analysis and processing of (medical) data, signals or images
the processing of information produced during clinical research
Course lay-out
Because the scientific research project has the character of a practical a 100% presence is needed during working days at the location where the project is carried out. The student is obliged to attend the home comming days. The meetings will be held at the AMC. The schedule can be obtained via the secretarial office of the department Clinical Informatics.
Educational goals
At the end of the scientific research project the student will have acquired:
The capability of transforming the research question into a research design that will lead to an answer to the research question
The capability of collecting the literature relevant to the problem area and of critically assessing the contents of the collected literature
The capability of applying methods and techniques from medical informatics to the relevant problem area
The capability of providing written and oral reports of the research conducted, the approach adopted, the research results and the conclusions reached in the research
Involved departments

Evaluation
Evaluation of the course and assignmentsIn the previous two months I completed the literature review which served as input for the scientific research project. During the project I had to be flexible, because you had to deal with changes, politics and preferences of stakeholders and advisors. Many meetings were arranged to discuss the progress of the project and set up possible (new) directions for research. I enjoyed working with healthcare professionals and the other advisors of the project. They gave valuable feedback and provided a lot of ideas for more research. Furthermore the project covered a sensitive topic and therefore everything has to be right before it could be published in a scientific article. This resulted that we had a lot of responsibility and I am not affraid to take responsibility. After these ten months I could still improve on my presentation skills and I could be even more straight-to-the-point, to become better in discriminating between main points and side issues. I am glad with the supervision I received by my tutor and mentor.
