MAM01 - Current Issues in Medical Informatics I
Course description
Course ContentsThe first course is meant as a synchronization module. Lectures will be given about science, job opportunities and medical informatics subjects. Each Monday the students receive a number of articles that they have to study and discuss the next Friday. They not only have to study the contents but also the scientific quality of the described research. The contents will be discussed during group meetings. In oral presentations each student will present and discuss the content and scientific quality of a selected paper. The student has to write a paper about this subject. The paper will be evaluated leading to the final grade-point for the course.
Course lay-out
In this course various subjects will be presented via lectures, seminars and working groups. Students get self study assignments (critically read the contents of a number of papers) and at the end of the week the results of these assignments are discussed in a plenary session. Furthermore students get writing assignments and have to give oral presentations.
Educational goals
(I) To increase the student's knowledge of the broad spectrum of subjects that are currently studied in medical informatics.
(II) To acquaint students with the scientific approach to research.
Involved departments
Clinical informatics
Evaluation
Evaluation of the course and assignmentsThis was the first course of the Master Medical Informatics. I was a little bit disappointed about the scientific value of the course; the course was not difficult at all and it could be done in two weeks. The only assignment was worth completing was writing a paper. The goal of the paper was to describe and critize a study which had been described in a journal. The paper was checked by linguistic expert. The feedback given by him was very useful; the feedback given by the coordinator covered the technical aspects which could not be judged by the linguistic expert. I did receive mainly positive feedback and scored an 9.5. I will use the feedback I received during this assignment in future assignments.
