Evaluation of the first year study programme of the Bachelor

The first year is a preparation for the next years of the Bachelor, the next years will elaborate upon topics which have been presented in the first year. The workload of the first year was much higher than the high school years and I had to get familair to the new style of working. The first three courses were given in parallel, that caused a very high workload and furthermore a lot of students dropped out because of this. I understand the reasons for giving these three courses together; you will get a fairly good image about the area of Medical Informatics. However the coordinators of the three courses did not meet, as a consequence the deadlines were clustered and this caused that some of the assignments were skipped by students in order to succeed at least for a part of the assignments. We have communicated our problems with the setup with the coordinators, they have listened and some minor things have been changed. We shall see whether or not this will work.

 

After the three courses we got in touch with the real world practice. We have completed an internship at a general practitioner's office to see how healthcare professionals deal with information flows. I found this internship very useful. The last two courses of the first year discussed medical and informatical topics more in depth. The sixth course was about the lectures given by the students themselves. Fellow students were allowed to give feedback and the lecturer could use the feedback in future presentations. The applications that had to be created in the fifth course were more complex and were bigger than the applications of the third course.

 

I did not have many difficulties with the first year's courses. It cost a lot of time and sometimes I have to start earlier with studying the materials at hand and plan more of the learning; this will spread the workload. I made progress, however I can still improve my planning abilities. I will use the feedback to improve myself.
