BAM11 - Software Engineering Theory

Course description

Course lay-out

This course is closely related and intertwined with software engineering project (course number 12) and intramural internship. In this course has been setup according to the Problem Oriented Education (POE) model. In summary: students are devided into two groups and will discuss several cases presented to them and create educational goals. Each case is problem in the area of software engineering in the healthcare. Selfstudy is required to answer the educational goals and in the next meeting the results of the selfstudy is reported to the group. The coordinator will intervene when necessary.

Each group will meet every week for two hours, during this meeting the case is presented and discussed; which knowledge is already known and which parts of the case have to be researched, these parts form the educational goals. Each student will be the chair at a given time and another student will write everything down. These meetings will be supported by some lectures given throughout this course.

Educational goals

The goal of this course is to provide insight into concepts, processes and thoughts of software engineering. Furthermore insight is provided into methods and techniques for different phases of the development process. Also a couple of important aspects like modeling, quality control and project management are discussed to get insight in these topics. By using the POE model the student trains skills in structured problem solving and acquire knowledge independently.

Involved departments
  • Clinical Informatics
  • Guest Lecturers

Evaluation

Evaluation of the course and assignments

This course is the theoretical part of Software Engineering. Using the POE model resulted in an even more active approach to study the topics at hand than when task groups were used. In order to make the POE model a succes it was necessary to cooperate with all other members of the group. Another advantage of the cases was that they were closely related an represented the entire software engineering process. It was very useful and I learned a lot and passed the examination the first time.

By studying the cases insights were acquired into the entire software engineering process and which tools, methods and techniques were at hand. I have acquired a lot more insight into the entire process of software engineering.
